Hutson, M, ODonnell, E, Brooke-Wavell, K, Blagrove, R (Accepted for publication) Pre-print: Incidence of bone stress injury is greater in competitive female distance runners that suffer with low energy availability independent of participation in plyometric training, Emily Petherick provided valuable statistical advice. This is a pre-print copy of our manuscript before peer-review.Bone stress injury (BSI) is prevalent in female distance runners. Low energy availability is implicated in reduced bone health in endurance athletes in the Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport and Female Athlete Triad models. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate an association between menstrual disturbance, as a proxy for chronic energy availability, and incidence of BSI, and explore whether participation in plyometric training had an impact on it. METHODS: Competitive female distance runners (n = 295) aged ≥18 years were surveyed online for training habits, menstrual function, and BSI, during the previous 12 months. Oligo/amenorrhoea (RESULTS: BSI incidence rate was 2.32 (p = 0.01, 95% CI = 1.20-4.51) times greater in oligo/amenorrhoeic (44 per 100 runners) than in eumenorrhoeic runners (19 per 100 runners). This effect remained statistically significant after adjusting for covariates. BSI incidence rate was the same in oligo/amenorrhoeic and eumenorrhoeic runners that used plyometric training, but 3.71 (p = 0.001, 95% CI: 1.67-8.2) times greater in oligo/amenorrhoeic versus eumenorrhoeic runners that did not use plyometric training. However, the effect of plyometrics was non-significant (menstrual function × plyometric training interaction, p = 0.09; main effect, p = 0.54).CONCLUSION: Conventional plyometric training may not reduce incidence of BSI in female distance runners, but prolonged periods of low energy availability should be avoided.
