Other

Dias, P, Mitchell, S, Harland, A (Accepted for publication) IoT decision-making framework for future state-change protection in cricket batting, In this paper, we discuss an Internet of Things (IoT) framework in cricket to enable the utilisation of information collected from various sources, and in particular, demonstrate its future potential to encompass and improve player safety by introducing a novel approach for future smart and adaptive Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that better resolves the competing demands for batter performance, protection and comfort. Two critical subsystems in a future smart adaptive PPE are proposed: an active decision-making system and a statechange enabled protective response system. The paper outlines and evaluates a potential decision-making system that uses batting movement data collected from body-worn Inertial Measuring Units (IMU). The active decision-making system is designed around four binary classification problems, with different speeds of decision-making, to ensure efficient resource management critical to the envisioned smart wearable PPE system. Ten righthanded male batters participated in a simulated indoor batting experiment; supervised machine learning was then used to classify three injury risk states, based on the collected movement data. The results show that using the identified measurement feature vector the active decision-making system developed was capable of identifying the highest risk activity with an F-Score value >97%..
